Slipform Construction of Concrete Tower Support Legs
The two main concrete support legs for this dramatic 160 meter tall observation tower overlooking Portsmouth Harbor are hexagonal in section. The cross sections of the legs taper as they get higher and then join into one tower section for the top 50 meters of the structure. The cross sections of the legs are hollow, with one housing the internal passenger lift and the other a full height internal staircase.
The construction of the Spinnaker Tower legs is widely regarded as one of the most difficult slipform operations carried out in the UK to date.
