Brookhaven Abatement & Demolition Project Highlight
ICC Commonwealth Completes Chimney Abatement & Demolition |
at Brookhaven National Laboratory |
ICC is pleased to have successfully completed the abatement and demolition for the 320’ tall High Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR) vent stack constructed in 1947, the same year the lab was founded.
ICC Commonwealth (ICC) was awarded the contract to perform coating abatement of the lead and asbestos based paint on the exterior of the Brookhaven chimney as well as perform systematical chimney demolition down to grade level. The chimney was radiologically contaminated on the interior surface of the concrete column requiring complex air and dust monitoring throughout the abatement and demolition phases. |
Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of several labs located across the country that is U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded in research including nuclear and high energy physics, energy science and technology, environmental and bioscience, nanoscience, and national security. |
Work was performed for the US Army Corps of Engineers under contract with DOE’s Office of Environmental Management. |
This complex project involved a contaminated stack on a high-profile stakeholder site and required meticulous planning for each phase. |
